Consumer Unit Upgrade near Exeter

The Brief

A homeowner near Exeter had an old fuse board with rewireable fuses and no RCD protection. It had been flagged on a survey, and with an older installation behind it, they wanted the reassurance of a modern board fitted and certified by a registered electrician. They called SJ Electrical Services for a straight answer and a fixed price.

What We Did

Stewart carried out the upgrade in a single visit:

• Assessed the existing installation: Checked the condition of the wiring the board feeds, so we knew exactly what we were connecting the new unit to.
• Removed the old board: Safely isolated the supply and removed the ageing rewireable fuse board.
• Fitted a modern consumer unit: Installed a new board with individual RCBO protection, so a fault on one circuit no longer takes out the rest.
• Labelled every circuit: Identified and clearly labelled each circuit for easy reference in future.
• Tested the installation: Carried out a full set of tests on every circuit before and after the swap.
• Certified and notified: Issued an Electrical Installation Certificate and notified Building Control.

The Result

A safer, clearer consumer unit with the right protection on every circuit, and paperwork the homeowner can hand straight to a buyer, landlord or insurer. The survey point is cleared, and the household has proper, modern fault protection where before it had none.

Job Duration: Completed in around three hours, with the power off for only part of the day.
